Primary and secondary filters: they are not interchangeable<\/h2>\n\n

The primary filter does the heavy lifting and gets dirty first. The secondary filter is a safety feature: if the primary filter is damaged, installed incorrectly, or removed during a service, the secondary filter prevents dust from reaching the engine directly. That\u2019s why it should not be removed or left uninstalled to save money.<\/p>\n\n

Best practice is to always install the secondary filter specified by the manufacturer and follow its recommended replacement interval, which is longer than that of the primary filter.<\/p>\n\n

Cabin filter: protects the operator, not the engine<\/h2>\n\n

The cabin filter traps dust and particles that the driver would otherwise breathe in, and its condition affects the efficiency of the climate control and ventilation systems. It\u2019s important to distinguish it from the engine air filter: it\u2019s not installed in the same location, nor does it have the same dimensions. Some cabins have two filters\u2014one for outside air and one for recirculated air.<\/p>\n\n

How often should the air filter be replaced?<\/h2>\n\n

The most reliable guide is the tractor manual. As a general guideline, New Holland specifies in its technical documentation for the engine air filter that the primary filter<\/strong> should be replaced every 600 hours or 1 year<\/strong>, and the secondary filter every 1,200 hours or 2 years<\/strong>, whichever comes first. For John Deere and other brands, the intervals may vary depending on the model and series, so it\u2019s best to consult the specific manual.<\/p>\n\n

These intervals apply to normal conditions. If the tractor is operating on very dry soil, in dusty conditions, or while harvesting straw and grain, inspections should be much more frequent. A filter that has reached its recommended service interval in terms of hours but has been operating in extreme conditions may become clogged sooner.<\/p>\n\n
